MICHIGAN CIVIL DEFENSE MUSEUM

The Office Of Civil Defense in Detroit

In April 2009 I was able to visit the old office of civil defense.
This building is now shared mostly by Detroit EMS and Detroit Parks and Rec.
The Building has remained almost unchanged since it was built in the 1950's.
Although mininum maitainance has been done through out the structure.
A few years back the basement flooded (you can see in some of the basement photo's how high the water got). And all the remaining CD items were destroyed and thrown out due to the water damage.

When I entered the building, I entered thru the parking lot side out back,

The Main Lobby

I forgot to ask, but I think behind these doors was used as a classroom

Viewing down the hall.

Still looking close to how it was back in the 1950's

At one of the office doors, the Original decals are still found.

When you go down the two flights of stairs, you are greeted by near darkness.

Many of the lights are not working or burned out. Not much can be said on what was where.

The EMS person who showed me around said there was a large map room, offices, communications room.

In most of the photo's you can see the different colors painted, which suggest an area.

There are rest rooms and a boiler room. But this seems like it was more like a ordinary Fallout Shelter.

I was thinking that there would of been blast valves, decontamination area's as you go into the basement.  But I guess not.

Below are the two garage area's that had the REO and GMC Civil Defense Heavy Rescue Trucks.

By the records I have, it indicates that there were 3 rescue trucks and 12 rescue trailers. The trailers were placed around the city, with one in the Parks and Rec building behind the Detroit Office of Civil Defense in Palmer Park.
